The Importance of Getting Married

More often than not marriage is a momentous step and it is important that we, as Muslims, have the right intentions when undertaking such a momentous step. Imām Bayhaqi narrates in his Shu`ab al-Imān that the Prophet Muḥammad  () said, “When a person enters matrimony, he has completed half of his religion; let him now fear Allāh regarding the remaining half.”

Marriage, like other aspects of life, is a test for the Muslim in this world. During marriage one faces many up and downs, it is not all happiness, just like the rest of family life.

So why bother trying to get married?

We are living in an era where nobody needs anybody else. The State provides for us when we are sick, it provides for us if we are financially hard up and the social media provides for our amusement. Many young Muslim professionals, especially women do not see any advantage in getting married, only potential problems. Yet, marriage is a commandment of  Allāh () which satisfies the very nature of man and woman, it is a sunnah of the Prophets which has been especially emphasized. Marriage is also a form of ibdah from which one can reap perpetual rewards, it is a way of seeking the pleasure of Allāh (), a way of attaining spiritual purity, protection from sin, the foundation of a sound family, the foundation of a moral community, and a means for the preservation of mankind. Those who feel self-sufficient in remaining single, without any intention of getting married, the Prophet Muḥammad () said that, dependent and helpless is the one who has no wife or husband, and that there is no celibacy in Islām.

As Muslims, we should view marriage as a Sunnah of the Prophet Muḥammad (), that in itself should be enough for one to try to seek marriage. The Sunnah of the Prophet Muḥammad () is not only perfect in concept but also perfect in the practical sense. Intentionally forsaking the Sunnah of the Prophet Muḥammad () is not to be taken lightly.
